How to use black head remover

In the practice we receive visits from patients who have discovered dark spots or points on their teeth at home. They worry about whether they have tooth decay and whether the hole has to be drilled and filled immediately.

First of all, we can reassure the relevant patients: A black point can, but does not have to be, tooth decay. And if it's tooth decay, it doesn't always have to be treated with a drill.

We dentists first want to answer the following question in this regard: Is the dark area a superficial change or a deeper caries, so that treatment is necessary? To do this, we first check the oral cavity thoroughly - with a probe, mirror and magnifying glasses. And if necessary, an X-ray is taken.
Superficial changes

The black dots or areas on the tooth surface - the tooth enamel - are mostly discolored pits or fissures (furrows between the cusps) in the posterior teeth, but also discolored anterior teeth. There are various causes for the discoloration. None of them need to be treated directly with a drill.

A pure discoloration of the surface of the posterior teeth occurs as follows: A demineralization process results in a small lesion in the tooth enamel (hole in the tooth due to incipient caries. See also box below "How does caries arise?").

Regular brushing, professional tooth cleaning and fluoridation bring this process to a standstill. While the tooth enamel remineralizes, colorings are now deposited from the outside. For example from tobacco or tea. Put simply, the discoloration is a “scar” in the tooth enamel, a so-called “brown spot” is created and describes an inactive caries. The dentist makes a note of this in his patient file and checks it at regular intervals.

Another cause of discoloration on the tooth surface can be medications taken during pregnancy (such as tetracycline-containing antibiotics), during which the enamel of the embryo develops. Excessive fluoride intake in childhood can also lead to discoloration.
Deeper changes

In addition to the clearly visible ones, there are also deeper fissures in the posterior teeth. Some of them run like an hourglass: on the surface they are rather narrow, in the depth they expand. At first glance, it may therefore look as if it is just a small discoloration. An X-ray can be of great help in determining whether the defect is deeper. Black Head Remover

If this is the case, the caries should be removed from the tooth with a drill and closed with a filling. Tooth-colored composites or ceramics are suitable filling materials.

The treatment is painless and, with proper care, the tooth does not need any further treatment for many years.
Regular checks against loss of hard tooth substance

Either way, we recommend cleaning your teeth once a year during dental hygiene and then checking them at the dentist. If necessary, you can act quickly with it and avoid tooth decay or a major loss of hard tooth substance.

Caries treated in good time with the help of a filling also protects the tooth from a significantly more cost-intensive and complex root canal treatment.
